JFK 60th Anniversary Banquet
Wednesday, November 20, 2019
Presidential candidate John F. Kennedy visited Hays, Kansas, on November 20, 1959 during his campaign.
To celebrate the 60th anniversary of this event, the Ellis County Democratic Party will recreate the community activities that took place that day, including a banquet at the former Kennedy Middle School, known as Jefferson West in 1959.
In 1959, tickets were $10, which today would cost $88.
In addition to the banquet honoring the 60th anniversary of Kennedy's visit, Mr. Oliphant will hold a news conference that afternoon in the Memorial Union.
The evening before the banquet, at 7 PM, on November 19, there will be a panel discussion at the Fort Hays Ballroom on the FHSU campus focusing on Kennedy's trip to Kansas in 1959 & Norbert Dreiling's role. Panel members will include Dr. Burdett A. Loomis, political sicience professor emeritus at university of Kansas & noted historian of Kansas politics, John T. Bird, senior partner in the law firm of Glassman Bird Powell L.L.P. & a protege of Norbert Dreiling who has been involved with Kansas politics for several decades, & Randy Gonzales, who graduated from FHSU in May 2019 with a master's degree in History, & who wrote his thesis on Kennedy's trip to Kansas.
The panel discussion is FREE & open to the public.
