FHSU School of Visual & Performing Arts presents: Silent Sky

Sunday, November 12, 2023

Hentrietta Leavitt, an unsung pioneer astronomer, made a discovery in 1912 that became a cornerstone of modern astronomical science.

While working at the Harvard Observatory, Henrietta, & her fellow "women computers" (whose logging of the brightness of stars more resembled book-keeping than research) transformed the study of astronomy & our concept of the cosmos. Her discovery of 2,400 new variable stars & her breakthrough calculations about their fluctuating brightness enabled astronomers, including Hubble, to map the Milky Way & beyond.
