This is the newest trail system of the various hiking and fitness trails
in Hays. It was dedicated on August 13, 2011, with a ceremony that
recognized Dr. Howard Reynolds, a retired professor of biological
sciences at Fort Hays State University. The two miles of nature trails,
located just west of the Sternberg Museum of Natural History, wind
through a 22 acre outdoor classroom. One of the highlights of the trail
is Chetolah Creek, that meanders through the western portion of the trail
and also forms two small ponds. The trail provides a natural
environmental setting with an amphitheater, footbridge, along with native trees,
flowers, and shrubs. Some portions of the trail follow the creek and
some areas are out in the wide open grass fields through the rolling
hilly areas. The trail was named for Dr. Reynolds who was the curator
of the Sternberg Musuem of Natural History's herbarium from 1957 to
1982.
